HIMACS chosen for bathroom surfaces at the Barbican, London’s iconic building

The HIMACS bathroom vanity and integrated basin brings a fabulous glamorous feel to the Barbican penthouse.

Something of an iconic London building in the world of brutalist architecture, the semi-circular Frobisher Crescent located above London’s Barbican Centre makes quite an impact. Originally designed as residential accommodation, in 1970 the building was turned into office space instead. Until 2010 that is, when the top three floors were converted into apartments by private developers. The penthouse duplex shown here was created from two flats, which merged into one larger abode in 2012 with a spacious structural opening to link the living spaces together. Francisco Sutherland Architects, were tasked with redesigning the bathrooms and kitchen, and improving the accommodation throughout. The solution was to enhance the original vaulted ceilings and double height spaces, increase modesty with four large sliding doors and electrochromic glass balustrades and refurbish with new layouts and fittings. This included the use of HIMACS in Alpine White for the bathroom vanity and CB330C integrated round basin.

HIMACS in Alpine White was selected for the seamlessly chic bathroom vanity and CB330C integrated round basin. The basin is traditionally a countertop basin, so it is interesting that in this project, the architects and fabricator Deeley Fabrications MK chose to adapt it to create a circular integrated design instead. This not only mirrors the arched window above, but beautifully demonstrates the seamless, join-free qualities of HIMACS, which appear sleek and smooth while creating a hygienic, germ-free finish that is quick and easy to clean.

Due to its flexibility and special characteristics, HIMACS is ideal for bathrooms and kitchens. HIMACS is incredibly hygienic and resistant to wear and tear, scratches, stains and UV rays. Moreover, its non-porous surface makes the material completely waterproof and extremely quick and easy to clean. The thermoformable properties of HIMACS also allow it to be moulded into any shape and size, making it the perfect material for creating vanities and worksurfaces with integrated and circular basins and sinks. The absence of visible seams also ensures a smooth, seamless look that prevents dirt, bacteria and viruses building up on the surface. This makes HIMACS a Solid Surface material with unbeatable hygienic properties, guaranteed by certifications that comply with LGA and NSF international standards.
