Sustainability and transparency are now central to material specification, with architects and designers increasingly required to demonstrate responsible sourcing and measurable environmental performance. In line with this shift, the Association of Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers (ASCER), has renewed and extended the Spanish ceramic tile sector’s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for a further five years, reinforcing the verified sustainability credentials behind Tile of Spain products.

An EPD provides independently verified life-cycle assessment data in accordance with ISO 14025 standards, giving specifiers reliable, comparable environmental information to support certification schemes and project reporting. By maintaining a sector-wide EPD, ASCER offers consistency and confidence across Spanish ceramic and porcelain tile manufacturers, simplifying the specification process for projects with sustainability targets.

This renewed declaration is supported by continued progress in greener manufacturing across the Spanish tile industry. According to ASCER’s latest industry report, production reached 416 million square metres in 2024, up 5.6% year on year, with porcelain tiles accounting for 69% of output and large-format slabs continuing to grow in architectural use. Alongside this, manufacturers have increased investment in cleaner production, circular economy practices and energy efficiency.

Energy use remains a key challenge in ceramic manufacturing due to high-temperature firing, yet measurable improvements are being made. Renewable energy generation across the sector rose by 25% in 2024, while photovoltaic self-consumption now represents nearly 9% of total electricity demand. High-efficiency cogeneration has also expanded, with plants operating at around 88% efficiency, helping reduce primary energy use and emissions.

At factory level, innovation continues through electric kiln technology, advanced emissions controls, recycling systems and environmental certifications, demonstrating that technical performance and environmental responsibility are advancing together.

For specifiers, the renewed EPD confirms that Tile of Spain products are backed by transparent, third-party verified data as well as long-term durability and design quality.
