Specialist recruitment agency and online training provider, Simon Acres Group Limited attended a careers event at The Duston School in Northampton, providing information on the opportunities on offer within the KBB and merchant sectors.

The careers day was arranged as a speed networking event with representatives from local businesses given 10 minutes to talk to small groups of students about their career path. Jordan Burns, Group Sales Director attended on behalf of Simon Acres Group and engaged with over 50 students, aged 16 to 17, to discuss the prospects within the KBB and merchant industries with an emphasis on the apprenticeship route.

Jordan comments: “I had a fantastic day at The Duston School, the enthusiasm within the room was compelling with the students preparing to take the first steps into pursuing a career. There are so many opportunities within the KBB and merchant sectors and it was wonderful explaining these industries to the students and the types of jobs available within these sectors. Many were keen to go down the apprenticeship route, so it was a great opportunity to explain how this route had worked for me and how I’ve been able to progress in my career.

“Reaching the next generation of workers directly is so important. After the success of this experience, we hope to visit more schools in the future to spread the word about our industry and hopefully bring lots of new talent to the KBB and merchant sectors.”

Alongside its own efforts to advocate for apprenticeships and improve the skills shortage within the industry, Simon Acres Group is welcoming the news from the government on its new initiative Skills England.

Simon Acres, Managing Director, Simon Acres Group, says: “The new Skills England board is yet to be appointed and we absolutely need a team who will already understand the needs and will ensure proposals are presented clearly and without jargon. The first agreement to move two bodies into one is positive and helps to narrow down where information can be found. We wait for more information on replacing the apprenticeship levy with hopeful improvements for example, to simplify the gifting of apprenticeship funds. The overall announcement seems very positive and would be great if initiatives such as those in France are implemented, where general training is heavily subsidised to support the learning needs of our KBB and merchant industries.”
