One of the most popular design elements for modern homeowners, wood flooring is a diverse material that adds texture, warmth, movement and depth to spaces. Despite its appeal, there are still many misconceptions about how practical timber flooring is.

From concerns over maintenance to whether wood floors are appropriate for busy households with children and pets, Global Product & Innovation Director at Havwoods, Anthony Scott, separates fact from fiction.Screenshot 2026 08 24 133846

Wood floors are high maintenance

“Like any material, wood requires some care, but it isn’t as high maintenance as people often assume. How frequently you need to clean your floor will depend on the room and the amount of everyday footfall, but regular sweeping, vacuuming or dry mopping will help remove dust and grit that could otherwise scratch or scuff the surface. Wiping up spills promptly and following the recommended care guidance for your chosen finish will also help keep the floor looking its best.”Screenshot 2026 08 24 134002

Wood flooring doesn’t work in kitchens or bathrooms

“A timber floor is a great option for both kitchens and well-ventilated bathrooms, provided the right product is chosen. It’s true that wood is a natural material and therefore reacts differently to moisture and humidity compared to other surface types such as stone or tile – however this doesn’t make it impossible to incorporate into your scheme. Always choose an engineered wood floor, rather than solid wood, as its multi-layered construction helps reduce natural movement, making it better suited to rooms where moisture levels are changeable. When specified and maintained correctly, it delivers style, durability and long-lasting appeal.”

Wood flooring is expensive

“Wood flooring can be seen as a significant investment, but there are options available at a range of price points, so it is possible to find a floor that suits your budget. One of the most appealing features of timber is its longevity. A well-maintained wood floor can last a lifetime as it can be sanded and refinished to refresh their appearance, resulting in you spending less money over time and won’t require you needing to replace your floor later.”Screenshot 2026 08 24 134202

Wood floor is easily damaged

“No flooring material is completely immune to damage, but timber is much more resilient than people often assume. The key is choosing the right construction and finish for how the space will be used. Simple measures such as using felt pads beneath furniture, cleaning regularly and wiping up spills promptly will also help protect the surface. In busier areas, a more textured or characterful timber can be particularly forgiving, helping smaller marks associated with everyday living blend more naturally into the floor.”Screenshot 2026 08 24 134308

Wood flooring isn’t suitable for pets

“You don’t have to rule out wood flooring just because you have pets, but choosing the right product and finish is important. A UV-oiled finish can be a particularly practical choice for busy homes with pets. Unlike a lacquered finish, which sits on the surface of the wood, oil penetrates the timber, helping everyday scratches and marks appear less noticeable and making ongoing maintenance easier.

It’s also worth considering the overall appearance of the floor, as more characterful surfaces can be more forgiving of everyday wear. Simple measures such as using entrance mats to catch dirt and grit, protecting the floor around food and water bowls and cleaning up spills or accidents promptly will also help keep the floor looking its best.”
