‘My Wonderful Bakes’ competition winner to enjoy afternoon tea on Franke

Mel Crumpton from Benfleet in Essex has won afternoon tea for two courtesy of Franke after entering the company’s ‘My Wonderful Bakes’ social media competition and impressing the judges with her fresh fruit topped Victoria sponge cake complete with homemade jam.

The competition was launched to coincide with Franke’s annual Blooming Great Tea party which saw over 80 of their More in Store retailers host a tea party in June to raise funds in support of Marie Curie.

In honour of Queen Victoria’s 200th anniversary, retailers received a Victoria sponge cake exclusively created by award-winning cookbook author and culinary historian Regula Ysewijin, who took the cake back to its original roots, serving it up into fingers as opposed to the round shape we all know today. The My Wonderful Bakes competition ran on Facebook and Twitter encouraged novice bakers to come up with their own take on the Victoria sponge, or to come up with their own baking creation.

Jeanette Ward, communications manager at Franke, said: “We were impressed by the number of entries we had for the My Wonderful Bakes competition which was a way of engaging the general public with our Blooming Great Tea Party. Mel’s entry stood out because of her unique twist on the classic Victoria sponge. We hope she enjoys someone else’s baking with her prize of afternoon tea for two.”

Mel is set to enjoy afternoon tea at The Dorchester in London in September. She said: “I’m delighted to have won the prize of afternoon tea in Franke’s recent competition with my version of a Victoria Sponge Cake.  I will be taking my mum Linda with me, as she taught me everything I know about baking and we are both really looking forward to a wonderful experience at the Dorchester.”
