The British Institute of Fitted Interiors Specialists (BIFIS) has welcomed the Government’s announcement of new measures to help consumers identify and engage trusted traders through industry-approved codes.

The proposals recognise the important role that credible, sector-led codes can play in raising standards, improving transparency and giving consumers greater confidence when commissioning work in their homes. They also support responsible businesses by making it easier to distinguish professional operators from those whose poor practice damages public trust and the reputation of the wider industry.

BIFIS operates the code for the fitted interiors sector, providing a clear framework for professional conduct, consumer protection and accountability. The code underpins the Institute’s work to promote competent installation, responsible trading and consistently high standards across kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and the wider fitted interiors market.

Damian Walters, Chief Executive Officer of BIFIS, said: “We welcome the Government’s recognition that robust, industry-approved codes can provide consumers with greater confidence while supporting the many reputable businesses and skilled professionals who are committed to doing the right thing.

“BIFIS already operates the code for the fitted interiors sector. It provides an established foundation for raising standards, strengthening accountability and protecting consumers, while recognising businesses and installers that demonstrate professionalism and competence.

“We are working closely with partners across the industry to ensure that this framework continues to evolve, remains relevant to a changing market and helps future-proof the fitted interiors sector. Government backing for approved codes is a positive step, and BIFIS stands ready to contribute its experience to the next stage of this important work.”

BIFIS will continue to engage with Government, consumer bodies and industry partners as the measures develop. Its focus will remain on practical implementation, clear consumer information and a proportionate approach that raises standards without creating unnecessary complexity for responsible businesses.
